Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to Step Down Amid Party Pressure

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has decided to resign from office, according to local media reports, following his party’s setback in recent elections that left the ruling coalition without a majority in both houses of parliament.

Public broadcaster NHK reported on Sunday that Ishiba made the decision in an effort to avoid deepening divisions within his party. Meanwhile, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper said the prime minister had been unable to withstand growing calls for his resignation after the electoral defeat.

Ishiba, a veteran politician and former defense minister, took office with a pledge to strengthen Japan’s political stability and economic resilience. However, the loss of parliamentary dominance has fueled internal criticism, with many senior party members pushing for a leadership change to regain public confidence.

His departure is expected to trigger a leadership contest within the ruling party in the coming weeks, with potential successors already maneuvering to position themselves as the next leader of Japan.

The resignation marks another chapter in Japan’s recent political volatility, as the country faces economic challenges, demographic pressures, and rising regional security tensions.
