Japan has urged its citizens in China to remain alert and avoid large gatherings as diplomatic tensions intensify between Tokyo and Beijing following remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan.
The Japanese Embassy in Beijing issued an advisory asking nationals to stay aware of their surroundings and steer clear of crowded public areas or places frequently visited by Japanese residents.
Government spokesperson Minoru Kihara said the guidance was based on an overall assessment of political and security conditions in China and the broader region, as well as current social circumstances.
The diplomatic dispute escalated after Takaichi stated in parliament that Japan could respond militarily to any use of force against self-ruled Taiwan, which China considers an integral part of its territory.
