Japan has formally requested an exemption from former US President Donald Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, as Tokyo looks to protect its key industries from potential economic strain.

Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya raised the issue with his US counterpart, Marco Rubio, during a sideline meeting at the Munich Security Conference in Germany, according to a statement from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, Iwaya also expressed Japan’s desire to hold high-level security talks, involving foreign and defense ministers from both countries at the earliest possible date.

The request follows the recent February 7 White House meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Donald Trump, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a “new golden era” in US-Japan relations.

Tokyo is emphasizing cooperation in defense, economy, and technology, aiming to bolster economic ties while mitigating potential trade disputes.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry confirmed that Iwaya and Rubio have agreed to maintain close communication to enhance bilateral economic relations.

As part of this effort, Iwaya formally requested an exemption from the proposed US tariffs, highlighting concerns over the impact on Japanese exports and industries.

The US has yet to confirm whether Japan will be granted special exemptions, as trade negotiations between the two nations continue.
