Japan has unveiled a plan to construct underground shelters to evacuate citizens during emergency situations.

In a statement released on Monday, the government announced its intention to begin building these shelters on the Sakishima Islands in Okinawa Prefecture.

Each shelter will be a robust underground facility equipped with a blast-resistant door, ventilation system, and emergency power source, as reported by Japan Broadcasting Corporation NHK.

The Cabinet Secretariat plans to allocate over 100 million yen (approximately $680,000) for the project in the fiscal year 2024 budget.

Additionally, the government will assess the management of the 1,600 underground facilities that have been designated as evacuation shelters since April 2022 for emergency scenarios.
