Japan’s Meteorological Agency reported that a strong 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the country’s northern coast on Monday, prompting an official tsunami warning for nearby coastal regions.
According to the agency, the quake’s epicenter was located offshore between Aomori and Hokkaido, two prefectures frequently exposed to seismic activity due to Japan’s position along the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”
Officials warned that tsunami waves of up to 3 meters (approximately 10 feet) could potentially reach coastal areas. Residents were urged to move to higher ground and stay alert for updates, as aftershocks and additional tremors remain possible.
Japan maintains some of the world’s most advanced earthquake-monitoring and tsunami-detection systems, but authorities emphasized that immediate caution is necessary whenever a seismic event of this magnitude occurs.
Emergency response teams have been placed on standby, and local governments are monitoring the situation closely as more data becomes available.
