A Chinese naval survey ship was reportedly sighted entering Japanese territorial seas early on Sunday near Yakushima, an island in the southern Kagoshima prefecture, according to the Japanese Defense Ministry.
According to a Ministry of Defense statement, the ship entered Japanese waters around 2:30 a.m. local time and left at roughly 4:10 a.m. going west.
