In a significant statement that underscores the intertwining issues of regional stability and migration, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani highlighted Egypt's pivotal role in countering illegal migration and maintaining the stability of the African continent, from Libya to the sub-Saharan countries.
Speaking to the Italian news agency Aki, Tajani pointed out that Egypt, as one of the major countries bordering the Mediterranean, plays a critical role in the stability of North Africa. He emphasized the importance of preventing the Muslim Brotherhood from coming to power in Egypt, suggesting that such a development could undermine regional stability.
The remarks by the Italian Foreign Minister come against the backdrop of ongoing concerns in Europe over illegal migration. The Italian Interior Ministry reported a significant number of migrants arriving on its shores from Libya, with figures for the year 2023 reaching 22,662 illegal migrants, more than half of whom departed from Eastern Libya.
