Italy confirmed the evacuation of Afghani Sharbat Gula, 49, who became famous after her picture appeared on the cover of the "National Geographic" magazine in the 80s.
The statement said that the government had responded to requests from "non-profit organizations active in Afghanistan who, after the events of last August, received Sharbat Gula's appeal to be helped to leave their country."
McCurry took Gula's photo at the Nasir Bagh refugee camp in 1984 and her image went on to become the iconic cover of the National Geographic magazine the following year.
Two decades later McCurry managed to locate Gula when he took her photograph again.
