The Islamic State announced Thursday in an audio recording that its fourth leader, Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurashi had been killed in clashes with Tahrir al-Sham, formerly Jabhat al-Nusra, in northwestern Syria, and appointed a successor.
The organization's spokesman said in a recording published by jihadist accounts, "The sheikh, may God have mercy on him, was killed after a direct confrontation with the "apostasy" in one of the towns of Idlib countryside, after they tried to capture him, so he clashed with them with his weapon until he died of his wounds." .
The spokesman announced the appointment of Abu Hafs al-Hashimi al-Qurashi as the new leader of the extremist organization.
