Iranian media reported on Thursday that the naval forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have detained two oil tankers in the Persian Gulf on suspicion of fuel smuggling.
According to Tasnim News Agency, units from the IRGC Navy’s Second Region seized the two vessels without disclosing the nationality of their crews or the flags they were flying. The report said more than one million litres of smuggled fuel were found onboard the tankers.
Tasnim added that 15 foreign crew members were taken into custody and handed over to the relevant judicial authorities to complete legal procedures.
The agency said the two tankers were intercepted near Farsi Island, noting that they had allegedly been involved in fuel-smuggling operations for several months. The vessels were identified and stopped following what the IRGC described as surveillance, reconnaissance, and intelligence operations carried out by its naval forces.
Iran has repeatedly announced similar seizures in Gulf waters in recent years, often citing efforts to combat fuel smuggling and protect national resources.
