For the first time, Iraq is stepping into the realm of waste recycling and treatment for electricity generation.
The Chairman of the Iraqi National Investment Commission, Haider Makiya, announced on Saturday the reception of numerous applications to commence the country's pioneer project in waste-to-energy conversion.
Makiya highlighted that multiple and diverse techniques have been observed for the project's execution, as per the Iraqi News Agency "INA".
He emphasized that this waste treatment project, being a part of renewable energy initiatives, will alleviate Iraq from the greenhouse gas and carbon emissions resulting from waste burning. Hence, it provides a scientifically sound method for waste management.
He further stressed the paramount importance of meticulous project specifications to ensure its successful realization on the ground.
The Chairman mentioned that specialists from various ministries have been convened to study the waste treatment project, culminating in an exemplary worksheet of standards for expressing interest and applying to this investment opportunity.
Ahmed Musa, the spokesperson for the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, affirmed last year that the ministry has other projects in the pipeline, in collaboration with the Baghdad Secretariat and local governments.
Among these are waste recycling stations, with two sites already selected in Abu Ghraib and Nahrawan areas.
