Iraq has lodged an official complaint with the United Nations and the Security Council, condemning Israel's alleged violation of Iraqi airspace and sovereignty.
Iraqi government spokesperson Basem Al-Awadi confirmed on Monday that Iraq submitted a formal protest letter to the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council, denouncing what he described as “a flagrant violation” of Iraq’s airspace by Israeli military aircraft.
The complaint claims that Israeli aircraft breached Iraqi airspace on October 26 to attack military sites in Iran.
Iraq’s protest includes a demand for accountability for the incident and underscores Iraq’s firm stance against any unauthorized use of its territory in regional conflicts.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani instructed Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to address the airspace breach with the United States, in line with the bilateral Strategic Framework Agreement, which includes provisions for ensuring Iraq’s security and sovereignty.
This directive emphasizes Iraq’s expectation that the US will address such violations and work to prevent future incidents.
In the statement, Iraq reiterated its commitment to preserving the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing that Iraqi airspace and land should not be used as a base for attacks on neighboring countries, especially those with longstanding diplomatic ties.
The Iraqi government emphasized its dedication to stability in the region, aiming to prevent Iraq from becoming a staging ground for regional conflicts and reaffirming its support for peaceful resolution through dialogue.
The airstrike in question reportedly targeted Iranian military sites on October 26, following an Iranian missile strike on Israel earlier in the month.
