Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered the launch of talks with the United States over Tehran’s nuclear programme, Iranian media reported on Monday, amid heightened tensions with Washington, which has not ruled out the use of military force.

According to Fars News Agency, a government source said the president had instructed officials to begin negotiations with the United States. The report said Iran and the United States would hold discussions on the nuclear file, without specifying a date. The same information was carried by the state-run daily Iran and the reformist newspaper Shargh, while Agence France-Presse also cited the report.

Earlier on Monday, Iran said it expected an “framework” for negotiations with the United States to be set “in the coming days,” as U.S. President Donald Trump continues to warn of possible military action against Tehran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei said countries in the region are acting as intermediaries in the exchange of messages between Tehran and Washington, noting that the two sides have had no diplomatic relations for more than four decades.

Baghaei said several points have already been discussed and that Iran is reviewing and finalising the details of each stage of the diplomatic process it hopes to agree on in the coming days. This includes the mechanism and overall framework for the talks, he added, without specifying which issues would be on the agenda.
