Iranian state news agency IRNA cited a senior source at the presidency confirming that President Masoud Bezheshkian is safe following the ongoing military operations in the country.
The announcement comes amid escalating tensions after US President Donald Trump declared a “major and ongoing combat operation” against Iran, reiterating that Tehran cannot be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.
Early on Saturday, February 28, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that Israel had launched a preemptive strike against Iran. US media also reported that Washington participated in the attacks.
Explosions were heard across Tehran, with thick smoke rising over the city. Multiple rockets reportedly struck Daneshgah Street and the Jomhouri area in central Tehran. Explosions were also reported in Isfahan, Qom, Karaj, and Kermanshah.
The Israeli military stated that part of the initial airstrikes targeted high-profile Iranian figures, though these reports are still being verified. The attacks mark a sharp escalation in the US-Israel-Iran confrontation, with regional observers closely monitoring Iran’s potential response.
