Iran opposes the expansion of NATO, the country’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said during talks with his Finnish counterpart Pekka Haavisto in Geneva.

This came in a statement published by the Iranian Foreign Ministry on its website on Monday.

In the statement, Abdollahian said Tehran is "categorically against NATO expansion," extending the conflict in Ukraine and threatening the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries.

In May 2022, Finland and Sweden applied for NATO membership, but Turkyie blocked the accession process, demanding that they declare Kurdish organizations terrorist, as well as extradite people accused of terrorism or participation in the 2016 coup attempt.

At the end of January, a major scandal erupted between Turkiye and Sweden regarding the burning of the Holy Quran near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.

In addition, protesters near Stockholm City Hall hung an upside-down effigy resembling Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a rally organized by the Kurdistan Democratic Community Center in support of the Kurdistan Workers' Party in mid-January.

The president mentioned that Sweden should not expect Ankara to support its application to join NATO after this and other anti-Turkish measures in Stockholm.
