Up to 45 million more people could face acute hunger if the war involving Iran continues through June, according to an analysis released Tuesday by the World Food Programme (WFP).
WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau told reporters in Geneva that rising food, oil, and shipping costs linked to the conflict could significantly worsen global food insecurity.
The analysis indicates that the crisis could push the number of people facing acute hunger worldwide beyond the current 319 million, already the highest level on record.
WFP warned that higher energy prices and disrupted global supply chains could drive food costs even higher, putting millions more at risk of severe hunger if the conflict continues.
