Iran and Russia are set to establish a maritime transport consortium, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Iran to Russia, Kazem Jalali announced.

According to TV BRICS, he explained that the cooperation agreement was reached following meetings between representatives of the two countries in Makhachkala on 5 and 6 November.

“This consortium has been created for the comprehensive development of trade, transit and joint transport between the two countries,” he said.

Jalali noted that cooperation with Russia in the field of maritime transport is a “strategic objective”.

He further mentioned that the parties have defined the framework of cooperation and the main areas of work, while the official document detailing the results of the negotiations is expected to be published within a month.

This also came after Deputy Minister of Transport Dmitry Zverev recently met with the Head of the Ports and Maritime Organisation of Iran, Saeed Rasouli. They discussed opportunities to increase transport volumes across the Caspian Sea.

It is reported that the Iranian side is interested in the participation of Russian companies in the development of the port of Chabahar in the Persian Gulf. Among the other priorities are the development of railway and road routes leading to the ports of the Caspian Sea.
