Iran and Russia have inked an agreement to implement the Rasht–Astara railway project, a key segment of the International North–South Transport Corridor designed to enhance trade across Eurasia.

The new rail link will connect northern Iran to Azerbaijan and integrate with Russia’s rail network, completing the western route of the corridor and enabling faster cargo movement between Russia, Iran, and Asian and Middle Eastern markets.

Officials say the project, estimated at around €1.6 billion, will receive major financial backing from Russia, including an intergovernmental loan of approximately €1.3 billion.

Preparatory work is already underway, with technical and logistical arrangements being finalized by teams from both countries.

Once operational, the Rasht–Astara railway is expected to improve regional transport efficiency, strengthen economic ties between Tehran and Moscow, and expand trade opportunities along the Eurasian corridor.
