According to a local oil and gas analytics company, Iranian natural gas deliveries to Iraq rose dramatically in April compared to earlier this year.

According to a report released on Saturday, the MEES cited a senior source in the Iraqi Electricity Ministry as claiming that in April, the average daily import of gas from Iran for use in Iraqi power plants reached 30-40 million cubic metres.

According to Ali Ahmad, the head of Iraq's government-run power plant, Iranian gas deliveries to Iraq surged three to four times in April compared to the first few months of 2023.

As Iraq prepares for a scorching summer, when demand for cooling will hit record highs nationwide, the supply has increased.

An important portion of the gas supply needed by Iraq to fuel its power plant comes from Iran. The Arab nation has been granted a number of exceptions from US sanctions on Iran so that it can keep importing energy from its eastern neighbour.

Iraq's reliance on Iranian gas decreased dramatically in 2021 as a result of the Arab nation's failure to make energy debt payments to Tehran.

Up until early this year, when Iranian authorities declared that Iraqis had discovered a means to circumvent US sanctions to pay for petrol imports, supplies had remained at low levels.

Recently, senior members of the Iraqi administration have visited Iran to talk about stepping up their bilateral energy cooperation.

President Abdul Latif Rashid was in Tehran on Saturday for a first official visit since he took office in Baghdad in October.
