Iran is preparing over 300 underground facilities, including metro stations and parking garages, to serve as shelters for around 2.5 million residents of Tehran, the head of the city’s Crisis Management Organization, Ali Nasiri, told SNN.

Nasiri confirmed that 82 metro stations have already been equipped as emergency shelters, with signage and public information displays to be installed shortly.

The announcement comes amid escalating tensions with the United States. On January 26, President Donald Trump warned of a “massive fleet” moving toward Iran and urged Tehran to negotiate a “fair and reciprocal” deal requiring the complete abandonment of nuclear weapons.

Trump also recalled that in June 2025, the U.S. carried out strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities under an operation dubbed “Midnight Hammer” and cautioned that any future attacks would be “worse.”

In response, Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, threatened to target U.S. military infrastructure and allies in the Middle East if Iran were attacked, while emphasizing willingness to negotiate only “without threats or intimidation.”
