Iranian authorities announced on Sunday the killing of Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Abdolrahim Mousavi, in what Tehran described as a joint US-Israeli military attack.

According to Iranian official statements, Mousavi had been appointed as Chief of Staff on June 13, 2025, by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, succeeding Mohammad Bagheri, who was reportedly killed in a previous Israeli strike.

Iranian media said Mousavi is the fourth senior Iranian official whose death has been announced since the start of the latest wave of attacks.

The Iranian news agency Fars also reported the killing of Major General Sardar Rezaeian, head of intelligence for Iran’s Internal Security Forces.

Earlier, Iranian authorities had announced the deaths of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, his advisor Ali Shamkhani, and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Mohammad Pakpour.

Media reports, citing intelligence and military sources, indicated that nearly 40 Iranian officials may have been killed in the large-scale air operation. These figures have not been independently verified.

On Saturday, Israel announced the killing of five Iranian commanders in strikes targeting Tehran, in addition to Shamkhani and Pakpour. Mousavi was not included in the Israeli statement at that time.

The commanders named by Israel include:

• Salah Asadi, head of the intelligence department at the Military Emergency Command

• Brigadier General Mohammad Shirazi, head of the military office of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei

• Aziz Nasirzadeh, nominated by President Masoud Pezeshkian for the defense portfolio

• Hossein Jabal Amelian, commander of naval industries within the IRGC

• IRGC commander Reza Mozaffari Nia

The latest developments mark a significant escalation in regional tensions, with the situation continuing to unfold amid conflicting statements and limited independent confirmation from international sources.
