In a landmark collaboration, the European Commission, Cyprus, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and the United Kingdom have announced the initiation of a maritime corridor to facilitate the delivery of vital humanitarian assistance to the besieged enclave of Gaza.

This development comes in response to the acute humanitarian crisis afflicting Palestinian families in Gaza, who are in urgent need of basic supplies.

This initiative builds upon the Amalthea Initiative led by Cyprus, which has pioneered a secure method for the maritime transport of aid from Cyprus to Gaza.

The coalition aims to significantly augment the delivery of humanitarian aid by sea, working in tandem with UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza, Sigrid Kaag, who oversees the regulation and verification of aid inflow into Gaza under UN Security Council Resolution 2720.

The UAE's pivotal role in rallying support for this initiative is set to facilitate the first shipment of food to Gaza's inhabitants by sea.

In the forthcoming days, Cyprus will host a high-level meeting aimed at expediting the operations of this maritime corridor, which seeks to complement existing land and air passages, including those from Egypt and Jordan.

The United States has further committed to an urgent operation spearheaded by the US military to construct a temporary pier in Gaza, enabling the maritime influx of substantial humanitarian aid. This endeavor will be meticulously coordinated with the Israeli government.

Navigating the delivery of aid directly to Gaza by sea entails complexities, compelling the allied nations to continually evaluate and refine their strategies to maximize the efficacy of aid distribution.

This maritime corridor is envisioned as a crucial component of a broader strategy to enhance the flow of humanitarian aid and commercial goods into Gaza through all feasible channels.

The coalition is dedicated to working with Israel to broaden land deliveries, urging the opening of more passages to extend aid reach.

Central to this initiative is the adherence to international humanitarian law, particularly the imperative to safeguard civilian lives.

Collectively, the coalition pledges to intensify efforts to ensure that aid reaches those in dire need within Gaza.
