Indonesia is prepared to host the Summer Olympic Games in the country’s new capital of Nusantara in 2036, according to Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Wednesday.

"We express our readiness to host the 2036 Olympic Games in our country’s new capital of Nusantara," Widodo said speaking at the G20 Summit, which is currently hosted by Indonesia’s Bali.

Widodo also emphasized that sports should remain outside politics and "have the power to unite the whole world, especially in light of the current developments."

He announced plans to move Indonesia's capital from Jakarta in 2019, and nearly $32 billion has been allocated for this. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic at the time, the project was suspended and expected to resume within two years.

Indonesia's Minister of National Development Planning Suharso Monoarfa stated in mid-January that a decision had been made regarding naming the new capital of Indonesia, which will be located in southeastern Kalimantan Island, as Nusantara, which means "archipelago".

Indonesia is located on the largest archipelago in the world, which consists of 18,000 islands.
