Heavy overnight rainfall triggered landslides and severe flooding across South Korea, prompting authorities to evacuate more than 500 people in the southern regions, where roads and buildings were submerged by floodwaters on Saturday.
The Korea Meteorological Administration had issued warnings of heavy rain across the southern province of Gyeongsang, as well as parts of Gangwon, Chungcheong, and Jeolla provinces. Further downpours of up to 60 mm were expected throughout the day.
According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters, 506 people from 342 homes in North and South Gyeongsang, Busan, and South Chungcheong had been evacuated by 4:00 AM due to the dangerous conditions brought on by the rain.
Most of the displaced, numbering 494 people from 330 homes, remain without housing and have taken refuge in temporary shelters or community centers.
The intense rainfall also flooded 54 sections of public roads, caused landslides, and led to the collapse of a wall in affected areas.
As South Korea braces for more potential weather-related challenges, authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide support to those displaced by the floods.
