Huawei to Release Its Mapping Tool to Challenge Google

Huawei announced to take on Google Maps, with plans to unveil a domestically-created alternative. The move is aimed to cope with Washington’s crackdown on the company amid the simmering trade war between the US and China.

In case the company loses access to Google Maps due to US blacklisting, Huawei can launch its own mapping services as early as October, according to China Daily reports.

Huawei to Release its Mapping Tool

The new tool which called "Map Kit" will support 40 languages at launch and will use Huawei’s advantage in the telecom sector to provide better services. It will use the telecom base stations in over 160 countries and regions.

This will allow the service to access real-time traffic flows and a highly sophisticated navigation system which can even recognize a car changing lanes.

In addition, the Map Kit would offer real-time traffic conditions and lane change recognition features. The service is also said to be available in 40 languages.

Last week, the Chinese tech giant unveiled Harmony OS - referred to as Hongmeng OS in China, which is aimed at reducing the company's reliance on Google-developed Android OS.

Focused on improved cross-platform working, Harmony OS would work across a wide range of devices including smart speakers, automobiles, computers, smart watches, wireless earbuds apart from smartphones and tablets.

Noteworthy, Huawei unveiled the the Honor Vision TV on Saturday, which will be the first device powered by Huawei’sown operating system, HarmonyOS.

The OS is part of Huawei’s so-called “internet of things” strategy where it is trying to create a consistent experience across various connected devices through its software.

According to Honorary CEO George Gao, this smart TV will be available on the market in China on Thursday. It is being marketed under the Honor brand for smartphones targeting a young customer segment.
