Historic Sarajevo Haggadah Unites Global Leaders in Call for Interfaith Courage, Solidarity

A high-profile interfaith gathering hosted by Project Legacy at the Cannon House Building last night brought together international diplomats and religious leaders to address the urgent need for historical memory in the face of rising global antisemitism, anti-Muslim hostility, and social fragmentation.

The program centered on the extraordinary survival of the Sarajevo Haggadah, a 15th-century Spanish manuscript.

The artifact serves as a living testament to interfaith responsibility: it was protected by Jewish communities through centuries of persecution, hidden in a mosque by Bosnian Muslim scholar Dervis Korkut during the Nazi occupation, and saved once again by the citizens of Sarajevo during the 1990s siege.

The event featured a distinguished delegation from Bosnia and Herzegovina, including President Denis Bećirović, Foreign Minister Elmedin Konaković, and Ambassador Sven Alkalaj.

Their presence, alongside leadership from the Muslim World League (MWL)—represented by Secretary General H.E. Sheikh Dr. Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa and CEO Muath Alamri—underscored how this historical legacy continues to shape modern religious diplomacy.

Speakers emphasized that the Sarajevo Haggadah stands as definitive proof that coexistence is not passive; rather, it depends on the active choices individuals make to protect one another during periods of uncertainty.

The gathering served as a poignant reminder that the true measure of any society is found in whether its people choose courage over silence and protection over indifference when history places the lives and heritage of "the other" in their care.
