In a historic display of international cooperation and maritime skill, the joint Russian-Brazilian expedition "Brotherhood-2025" has triumphantly returned to the port of Salvador, accordingtoTV BRICS. The arrival marks the conclusion of a grueling 322-day journey aboard the yacht Fraternidade, which saw a crew of seasoned explorers conquer some of the most treacherous waters on Earth.
Led by two veteran captains—Sergey Shcherbakov of Russia and 83-year-old Aleixo Belov of Brazil—the expedition followed a unique "north-to-south" route. Not only did the crew cross 24 time zones, but they also sailed from the northernmost continental point of the globe, Cape Chelyuskin, to the southernmost tip at Cape Horn.
A Journey of Firsts
The voyage was characterized by several world-first achievements. According to Captain Shcherbakov, the team successfully completed the earliest-ever passage of Cape Chelyuskin. For the Brazilian crew, the journey through the Northern Sea Route was particularly historic.
"Siberia is a special place," said Captain Belov during a video conference. "No Brazilian had ever traveled there before, and no Brazilian sailing yacht had ever passed through those waters. I am 83 years old; I no longer intend to undertake such voyages. Now, I have opened the way for young Brazilians to follow."
Scientific and Cultural Impact
Beyond the physical feat, the "Brotherhood-2025" mission served as a mobile laboratory. In collaboration with the Russian Geographical Society (RGS), the crew conducted extensive meteorological and hydrological observations.
Key scientific highlights included:
* Environmental Monitoring: Collecting data on ice conditions along the Northern Sea Route.
* Biodiversity Research: Surveys of seabirds and walrus rookeries on Bennett Island.
* Ethnographic Studies: Gathering folklore and cultural materials from remote ports including Dikson, Tiksi, and Pevek.
Natalia Belyakova, Director of the RGS Expeditionary Department, emphasized that the data collected by the ice-class yacht will be used to create methodological recommendations for future navigation in the changing Arctic environment.
A Symbolic Mission
The expedition was dedicated to four major milestones: the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Brazil, the 20th anniversary of the BRICS alliance, the 180th anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society, and the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
As the crew steps back onto dry land, their legacy will live on through a forthcoming documentary film and Aleixo Belov’s 14th book, aimed at inspiring the next generation of global explorers.
