High-End Fashion Brands to Produce Face Masks

High-end clothing brands starting are contributing to the fight against Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) by supplying personal protective items for medical workers.

American designer Christian Siriano and European labels Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Gucci, LVMH, Kering, and Prada, among others, have announced in the past few days, that they will begin producing face masks and other personal protective equipments that are in short supply for medical workers, who are risking their lives daily treating patients around worldwide during the outbreak.

Furthermore, Siriano had shared on Twitter a prototype for his upcoming supply.

Last week, a spokesperson for Siriano confirmed that the designer’s sewing team had started making face masks after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that there soon may not be enough to outfit health care workers.

A publicist for the designer stated in a press statement that he has a staff of sewers on salary sitting at home and ready to work and pointed out that they starting to make them now.

"We will donate and then a plan will be put together as we flesh it out to manufacture them/more." said the publicist.

On the other hand, Retailer Los Angeles Apparel has started making surgical masks and hospital gowns.

Meanwhile, swimwear company Karla Colletto unveiled its plan to help produce personal protective equipment for medical workers.

Siriano and Los Angeles Apparel are reported to be designing “washable, reusable masks” which are not technically “medical-grade,” however, Siriano plans for his masks to meet the standards of Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Moreover, Karla Colletto intends to replicate masks produced by 3M for those who need them most.

Furthermore, luxury labels Saint Laurent and Balenciaga are planning to begin producing face masks as soon as formal approval is granted, French parent company Kering said on Sunday.

It also promised to distribute three million surgical masks to French health authorities after buying and importing them from China.

Italian brand Gucci, another design house owned by Kering, is preparing to produce and donate over one million masks and 55,000 pairs of medical overalls to health officials there.

Meanwhile, LVMH, which owns luxury fashion brands including Louis Vuitton, Dior, Fendi, and Givenchy, announced last week that they were working to order and distribute 40 million face masks for France.

Moreover, the Luxury group is also planning to supply 10 million masks in France early next week; it will also use some of its perfume factories to produce much-needed hand sanitizer.
