Head of Iranian Nuclear Program Killed Near Tehran

Iranian official media reported, this evening, Friday, that the Iranian nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh Mahabadi, was assassinated in the Absurd Damavand area in Tehran.

Iranian local sources said that an armed clash took place between Mohsen Fakhrizadeh's bodyguard, and unidentified gunmen who targeted Mohsen Fakhrizadeh's car, killing the nuclear scientist.

The sources pointed out that the security forces now cordoned off the scene and closed the main entrance to the city.

The Iranian authorities have not released any official statement about the incident, and Iranian media outlets provide more details about the attackers or victims of the attack.

Concurrently, a leader of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps tweeted: "We will avenge the killing of nuclear scientists as we have done in the past."

Fakhrizadeh was the head of the Iranian nuclear program, and Washington considers him the head of Iran's weapons program.

According to information available about Fakhrizadeh, he was an officer in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and a professor of physics at Imam Hussein University in Tehran.
