The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island began erupting Sunday afternoon and flows are currently limited to the ground surrounding the crater, the US Geological Survey said.
The Hawaii Emergency Management Department wrote on the X platform that the eruption does not pose a threat to residential areas due to the lava flow, although volcanic particles and gases may cause breathing problems for those exposed to them.
The eruption was preceded by a period of strong earthquakes. The US Geological Survey raised the alert level of the volcano to warning and changed the aviation code from orange to red, the highest level.
Kilauea is located in a closed area of the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. In 2019, a series of earthquakes and a major volcanic eruption in Kilauea destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses.
The volcano erupted in January and June of this year.
