Hanwha Aerospace, South Korea’s leading aerospace and defense corporation, is set to participate in the Black Sea Defense & Aerospace (BSDA) 2024 Exhibition and Conference. The event will be held at the ROMAERO Complex in Bucharest, Romania, from 22nd to 24th May.

For the first time, Hanwha Aerospace will join this prestigious defense fair in the Black Sea region, representing the company’s ambitious initiatives to forge and expand partnerships with Romania and neighboring countries. At the exhibition, Hanwha Aerospace will display a range of advanced defense capabilities, focusing on combat vehicles and precision-guided weapons.

The centerpiece of Hanwha Aerospace’s showcase will be the Redback Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV). This state-of-the-art vehicle offers a range of innovative technologies designed to meet Romania’s military modernization needs. “With its adaptability and growth potential, the Redback is the world’s most sophisticated IFV, featuring best-in-class armored protection, mobility, and lethality,” said Billy Boohwan Lee, Head of Hanwha Aerospace Europe. “The Redback IFV solution is expected to significantly boost Romanian manufacturing capability through active industrial partnerships.”

Developed based on the South Korean Army’s K21 IFV, the Redback features advanced technologies such as in-arm suspension units, composite rubber tracks, a hard-kill active protection system, and a see-through helmet-mounted situational awareness display. The Redback was selected by Australia in 2023 for its LAND 400 Phase 3 program to deliver 129 IFVs, involving extensive Australian supply chains. It is also considered the baseline for the South Korean Army’s next-generation IFV development.

In addition to the Redback IFV, Hanwha Aerospace will showcase the K9 Thunder Self-Propelled Howitzer. This 155mm/52-caliber tracked howitzer is globally recognized and adopted by nine countries, including five NATO members: Poland, Norway, Estonia, Finland, and Türkiye. For the K9 program in Romania, Hanwha Aerospace has formed ‘Team Tunet,’ involving Romanian supply chains to maximize economic benefits through industrial partnerships.

“As a trusted partner for Romania, Hanwha Aerospace is fully committed to delivering high-quality products and services to support Romania’s military modernization plans,” said Jae Il Son, CEO and President of Hanwha Aerospace. “We are dedicated to contributing to the Romanian industry and economy through local manufacturing, employment, technology transfer, joint R&D, and export marketing.”

Other products to be presented at BSDA include the K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicle, the Chunmoo Multiple Rocket Launcher System, and the Chungum (Tigers) tactical guided missile for both manned and unmanned vehicles.

Visitors to BSDA can find Hanwha Aerospace in Hall C, stand 907.
