The recent statements by Musa Abu Marzouk, a member of Hamas's Political Bureau and the head of its Department of External Relations and International Affairs, regarding his assessment of the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel and the issue of the movement’s arms, have sparked widespread debate and raised questions about how the movement is handling the fallout.

In an interview with The New York Times published on Monday, Abu Marzouk expressed that he would not have supported the "October 7 attack" on Israel had he known the extent of the destruction it would cause in Gaza, and mentioned that there is readiness within Hamas to negotiate the future of its weapons in Gaza.

However, a Hamas spokesperson stated that these comments "do not represent the movement's steadfast position on its arms, and considers the October 7 attack a pivotal moment in the history of all occupied peoples."

Later, Hamas, in an official statement, described the comments as "inaccurate and taken out of context. The interview was conducted several days ago, and the published statements did not reflect the full content of the responses, being misrepresented in a way that does not serve the true meaning of the content presented in the interview," according to the text of their statement.

Sources familiar with Hamas told Al-Sharq Al-Awsat that the movement "settled with the statement it issued and did not consider taking any action against Abu Marzouk."
