Nigerian police said at least 30 people have been killed in armed attacks on villages in Nigeria's Sokoto state.

It was reported that the gunmen attacked six villages in Sokoto, in northwestern Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa. Most of the dead were members of vigilante groups in the rural areas of the state.

Allegedly, the attackers belonged to the Fulani ethnic group.

The attacks by the Fulani, who have a long nomadic tradition, are partly due to climate change, which is drying up the grasslands of northern Nigeria.

In the past few years, herders of the Fulani ethnic group have launched attacks on local farming communities in central Nigeria in an attempt to remove people from their land.

Observers have accused former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, an ethnic Fulani, of not doing enough to combat the violence. His successor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is now under pressure to improve the situation.
