On Monday, His Eminence Dr. Nazir Mohamed Ayyad, the Grand Mufti of Egypt, visited His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, to extend his congratulations to him and all Christian citizens on the occasion of Christmas.
The visit featured a high-level religious delegation, including:
His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed El-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar.
Dr. Osama Al-Azhari, Minister of Awqaf (Endowments).
Dr. Salama Dawood, President of Al-Azhar University.
Several senior scholars and leaders from Al-Azhar, Dar al-Ifta, and the Ministry of Awqaf.
A Message of National Unity
During the meeting, the Grand Mufti emphasized the profound fraternal bonds shared by all Egyptians regardless of faith. He noted that this social cohesion serves as the fundamental pillar of Egypt’s stability and progress, reflecting a resilient and unified national fabric.
Dr. Ayyad further explained that participating in the celebrations of fellow citizens is an embodiment of the "piety and justice" commanded by God in the Holy Quran:
"God does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion... that you be righteous toward them and act justly toward them" (Al-Mumtahanah: 8) and "Speak to people good words" (Al-Baqarah: 83).
He concluded by praying for Egypt’s continued security, prosperity, and communal harmony.
Strengthening Peace and Harmony
For his part, Pope Tawadros II expressed his deep appreciation for the visit, highlighting that such gestures reflect the deep-rooted brotherhood and spirit of cooperation among Egyptians. He stressed that these meetings are vital for reinforcing the values of peace and national harmony, cementing the principle of unity within a framework of mutual respect.
