Google announced on Friday, to allow other search engines to compete to be the default engine for new Android devices in Europe, Reuters reported.
The firm plans to give users the freedom to choose their preferred search engine, the move comes a year after the European Commission fined U.S tech giant $4.81 billion for blocking competitors by pre-installing its Chrome browser.
Google's New Options for Users
According to Google’s statement published in a blog post, Google’s users would be able to pick out a default search engine from four options while setting up a new Android Operating System-based tablet or Smartphone.
Google doesn’t mention the minimum bid, but each country will have a minimum bid threshold. Also, in case there aren’t enough bidders, Google will randomly fill the remaining slots with eligible providers that chose no to submit bids.
The companies have until September 13th to apply for eligibility and submit their bids for 2020. A similar process will take place once a year to determine the choice screen options for the following year.
