Google rolled out its new auto-archive feature for Android devices, which will free up storage space without completely uninstalling applications from user devices.

The tech giant highlighted that the auto-archiving tool can automatically lower the storage taken up by infrequently used apps by around 60% without entirely removing the app or its associated data from a user’s device.

Archived applications can be distinguished by a cloud icon overlaid on the app icon. Tapping the archived apps will re-download and fully restore them, provided the app is still available on Google Play.

Meanwhile, the new tool is only available on apps published using Android’s App Bundle format, and apps with archive support won’t appear as frequently on a device’s uninstall suggestions.

Earlier, Google’s Workspace apps, including Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, are getting a new look as the tech firm refreshes its design.

The new look is based on the company’s Material Design 3.

Moreover, the company is providing a range of new functionality to its Workspace apps with new smart chips. A new search chip will allow users to filter files easily on Google Drive.
