The promotion of the Russian language and its growing international appeal took center stage at the 17th Assembly of the Russian World, held in Moscow from 20 to 22 October.
Delegates from 105 countries participated in the annual forum, which focused on cultural cooperation, education, and the global reach of the Russian language. The plenary session, titled “Russian World: Fundamental Contribution to International Development – History, the Present, and the Future,” was chaired by Anatoly Torkunov, Rector of MGIMO University and a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
According to TV BRICS, Torkunov noted that Russian ranks among the world’s top five most widely spoken languages and is fifth in the number of scientific publications and citations. He said this reflects a sustained global interest in learning Russian, both for cultural exchange and professional development.
Representatives from several countries shared their experiences in promoting Russian education abroad. Huynh Song Van, Rector of Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, said the university annually enrolls 20–25 students in its Department of Russian Language to prepare future teachers.
“Our graduates have many opportunities to teach Vietnamese people to study Russian. It’s been very successful,” he said.
From India, "Ratheesh Nair", Honorary Consul of Russia in Thiruvananthapuram, underlined that Russian language proficiency opens valuable career opportunities for Indian professionals both in Russia and at home.
In a message to participants, Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to educational and cultural exchange, stressing that Russia remains open to sharing expertise and experience with international partners.
Organized by the Russkiy Mir Foundation with TV BRICS as an international media partner, this year’s Assembly set a new record for participation.
