The German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ Egypt) has hailed the launch of Egypt’s first integrated recycling system for aseptic beverage cartons, describing it as a pioneering public–private partnership that combines environmental responsibility with social and economic development.

The initiative, branded “Green Jobs from a Box”, was announced today by SIG in collaboration with GIZ Egypt, Plastic Bank, Carta Egypt, and Tile Green. The project introduces a closed-loop system to collect, recycle, and repurpose beverage cartons into new materials, creating both environmental and employment benefits.

Andreas Roep, Head of Green Transformation at GIZ Egypt, emphasized the importance of the project as a blueprint for future cooperation:

“We are delighted to support this impactful partnership through the develoPPP program and the ‘Invest for Jobs’ initiative, funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). This collaboration is not just about tackling pressing environmental challenges, it is about creating real social and economic value through green jobs.”

Roep added that the system reflects GIZ’s global priorities to drive a just transition and expand the circular economy, expressing hope that it will inspire similar ventures both within Egypt and beyond.

The project aims to showcase the potential of innovative, inclusive models in packaging waste management. By transforming discarded cartons into valuable raw materials, the initiative will help reduce landfill volumes, cut carbon emissions, and stimulate local industries. At the same time, it will generate employment opportunities across the recycling value chain, from collection to processing.

Egypt has in recent years intensified efforts to embed sustainability into its economic strategy, aligning with global climate targets and domestic priorities. The “Green Jobs from a Box” initiative highlights how international cooperation can translate ambitious policy frameworks into tangible action on the ground.

Industry experts say the project also strengthens Egypt’s positioning as a regional leader in circular economy initiatives, attracting investments and partnerships that blend environmental innovation with long-term economic growth.
