Germany has announced a series of humanitarian relief initiatives in Syria, allocating €60 million ($62.5 million) to support recovery efforts following the fall of the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad.

The announcement was made by German Development Minister Svenja Schulze, who highlighted the dire humanitarian conditions faced by the Syrian population.

After 14 years of civil war, most of Syria lies in ruins, with 90% of the population living in extreme poverty and heavily reliant on international aid.

Schulze described the situation as catastrophic but expressed cautious optimism about Syria's future, emphasizing the importance of providing support to enable positive change.

The aid projects will be implemented exclusively through United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations to ensure effective and transparent distribution.

Key components of the humanitarian initiative include €25 million allocated to UNICEF to rehabilitate schools and provide psychological support to children traumatized by the conflict.

Additionally, €19 million will be directed to the UN Development Programme (UNDP) to create short-term employment opportunities for internally displaced persons, focusing on debris and rubble removal efforts.
