Amid the rapidly deteriorating situation in the Middle East, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has expressed grave concern over the resumption of hostilities in Gaza following the end of the ceasefire due to intensified Israeli airstrikes.

In a strongly worded statement, Baerbock described the burning refugee tents and images of displaced, bloodied children as shocking and unacceptable. She underscored that international law applies even in self-defense, emphasizing the principle of proportionality in military operations.

“Children who are fleeing and internally displaced must never be used as bargaining chips in negotiations,” she asserted, calling for the protection of civilians and adherence to international humanitarian law.

Baerbock also warned that with the renewed fighting, the fate of remaining hostages, as well as the future of people in Israel, Gaza, and the broader Middle East, remains hanging by a thread. She stressed that escalating violence only fuels unimaginable suffering on all sides and urged all parties to return to diplomatic talks immediately.

The minister called for the swift resumption of negotiations for a second phase of the ceasefire and the release of additional hostages, stating that achieving a long-term solution to the conflict is in everyone’s interest.

Baerbock specifically urged the United States to leverage its regional influence and diplomatic weight to help restore stability, noting that security in the Middle East as a whole is at stake. She also confirmed that the conflict will be a key topic during her upcoming discussions in Lebanon, where she is set to travel the following morning.
