German Defense Minister Kramp-Karrenbauer intends to present a proposal aimed at strengthening the military functions of the European Union (EU) through the formation of alliances formed by member states from within the Union.

"I believe that Article 44 of the European treaties gives us the opportunity to issue joint decisions from the EU   and implement European tasks through alliances formed by member states willing to form these alliances," Karenbauer said in a statement reported by the German (Deutsche Welle) network.

She added that we are working on a proposal, which is expected to be discussed in October during the meeting of the bloc's defense ministers.

Article 44 states that the Council of the European Union can assign a group of member states to carry out a task if these states are willing to do so and if they have the necessary capabilities for such a task.

The article indicates that not all Member States have to be directly involved in such tasks.

The German minister believed that the Europeans should have the ability to act in a credible manner if they want the world to take them seriously by the other countries in the world and to have credibility.

She pointed out that there may be “situations in which we have a different situation of interests and this can also be within North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO ).

The German minister went on to say that she called within the European Union for this reason to take matters into its own hands and discuss how decisions are made, who commands the forces, what units will be assigned to the mission and what support forces are.

The Minister saw that there is an opportunity to move matters in this regard at the present time.
