The first meeting of foreign ministers of the G7 major countries this year, hosted by Japan, begins on Sunday in the Japanese resort of Karuizawa.

According to Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, the three-day event aims to show the unity of the G7 and help its delegates establish friendly and trusting relations.

The situation in Ukraine will be one of the main topics of the talks. On the eve of the meeting, Hayashi emphasized that the G7 aimed to show its unwavering support for Ukraine, again harshly criticizing Russia's actions.

At the same time, local analysts predict that no new sanctions will be imposed on Russia as a result of the summit.

According to political observers, both sides are likely to reaffirm their loyalty to the sanctions policy and pledge to do everything they can to ensure the full implementation of sanctions against Russia.

However, for the first time in a long time, discussion of another topic -- the G7 position on Taiwan in light of French President Emmanuel Macron's recent words -- may come to the fore.

A statement is likely to be issued as a result of the talks.
