The French embassy in Sudan has been closed until further notice, France's foreign affairs ministry said in a statement on Monday.

The ministry said the French mission in Khartoum would be closed "until further notice" and would no longer serve as a gathering point for foreigners trying to leave Sudan.

Earlier in the day, the ministry pointed out that last night witnessed the evacuation of 388 French nationals in Sudan and many other nationalities.

The political representative for foreign policy and security affairs of the European Union, Josep Borrell, announced today, Monday, that the evacuations of European citizens from Sudan have been successful.

"The evacuations of European citizens from Sudan were successful, as more than a thousand European citizens were evacuated, including 21 employees of the European mission," Borrell told reporters, ahead of the meeting of European foreign ministers. "We commend France's role in the evacuations."

Borrell added that the international partners are making efforts to end the conflict in Sudan and return to dialogue," noting that the EU’s ambassador to Sudan is still there, but not in Khartoum.

Several countries announced the evacuation or intention to evacuate their nationals from Sudan, due to the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.
