In a step intended to revive the democracy, France decided on Monday to cancel $5 billion in debt owed by Sudan to the European country.

Also in this regard, France declared it will lend Sudan $1.5 billion to help the African nation pay off its massive debt to the International Monetary Fund.

During a conference held by the African Leaders and International institutions on 17 May, France and other countries pledged approximately $4.4 million in support of the African country.

In an official statement, French President Emmanual Macron said: "France is in favour of an outright cancellation of our debt to Sudan" which amounts to "nearly $5 billion."

"The afflicted country needed to be rid of its "burden" of debt in order to move forwards," the statement added.

This decision also came after former President Donald Trump removed Sudan from the blacklist in January.
