France announced on Thursday that its military forces will begin withdrawing from Niger this week following a dispute with the ruling military council since the coup in July.

A week after the return of the French ambassador in Niamey to his country, the military leadership in France stated, "We will begin the disengagement process this week, in an orderly and safe manner, and in coordination with the Nigeriens."

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs had announced last Wednesday the arrival of the French ambassador to Niger, Sylvain Itté, in Paris.

Two weeks ago, French President Emmanuel Macron declared that Paris would recall its ambassador to Niamey and all embassy staff in Niger.

He also stated that the French military would leave Niger by the end of this year.

On July 27, military personnel in the Nigerien army announced the ousting of the country's president, Mohamed Bazoum, and detained him at his residence while closing the borders. This move was met with rejection from Western countries and the ECOWAS group, which imposed sanctions on Niger.

The National Defense Council was formed, with the commander of the guard, Abdoul-Rahmane Cherif, leading the country. On August 10, Cherif signed a decree to establish a transitional government.
