France is preparing to welcome researchers leaving the United States in response to policies under President Donald Trump, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Since Trump's return to office, his administration has significantly cut federal funding for critical scientific research and taken steps to remove hundreds of federal employees working in health and climate sectors.

French Minister of Higher Education and Research, Philippe Baptiste, stated that many renowned scientists are reconsidering their future in the U.S. and emphasized that France should welcome some of them.

Baptiste urged French research institutions to submit concrete proposals to accommodate these scientists, particularly in priority technological and scientific fields.

In response, Aix-Marseille University in southern France has announced a dedicated program to host American researchers, especially those focused on climate change.

The move follows Trump's decisions to withdraw the U.S. from the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement, alongside funding cuts in various scientific sectors overseen by billionaire ally Elon Musk.

Scientists across the US have staged protests against these policies, with French researchers in Toulouse also demonstrating in solidarity.

Additionally, Trump's appointment of vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as head of the Department of Health and Human Services has sparked outrage within the scientific community.
