France’s President Emmanuel Macron has strongly condemned the recent Israeli airstrikes targeting United Nations schools and the Maghazi refugee camp in Gaza, expressing deep concern over the escalating violence and significant civilian casualties.
In a statement released by the French presidency on Tuesday, Macron lamented the "excessively high number of civilian casualties" resulting from these attacks and firmly reminded Israel of its obligation to adhere to international humanitarian law.
The French leader's comments came during separate phone calls with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, who currently holds the presidency of the Arab League.
Macron stressed to the three leaders the urgent necessity of achieving a ceasefire, particularly to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza and to alleviate the suffering of Gaza’s residents.
He also voiced significant concerns over the deteriorating situation in the West Bank and reiterated France's firm opposition to new Israeli settlement activities, which he stated are undermining prospects for peace.
