Former Real Madrid President Dies after Contracting Coronavirus

Former Real Madrid president Lorenzo Sanz died on Saturday after contracting coronavirus.

Sanz was the chairman of the Whites from 1995 until 2000. During his presidency to Real Madrid, the Whites managed to claim the Uefa Champions League twice.

His son Lorenzo Sanz Duran revealed on his official Twitter page that his father has passed away due to COVID-19.

"My father has just died," Lorenzo tweeted.

"He did not deserve this end in this manner. One of the best, most courageous and hard working people I have seen in my life. His family and Real Madrid were his passion."

During his stay at Bernabéu, he signed many football stars such as Roberto Carlos, Clarence Seedorf, and Davor Suker.

Spanish authorities recorded 400 new coronavirus deaths, bringing the total number of the deaths in the European state to 1720.

On March 12, the Spanish authorities decided to suspend all sporting activities for two weeks after Real Madrid squad going into quarantine because of coronavirus.

On Wednesday, March 11, WHO declared that the coronavirus, which is spreading around the world, a “global pandemic; however, it announced the novel COVID-19 is still “controllable”.

According to the organization, the number of the COVID-19 infections outside China has doubled in the past two weeks, and the number of countries hit by the epidemic has tripled.

“We are very concerned to achieve the alarming levels of the outbreak and its severity, as well as the alarming levels of inaction,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a press conference in Geneva.

“Now, COVID-19 can be categorized as a pandemic… we have never seen a pandemic spread due to the coronavirus,” Adhanom added.
