Former Portugal's President Jorge Sampaio Dies at 81

Portugal's Former President Jorge Sampaio died at the age of 81, the Portuguese Presidency announced on Friday.

"Sampaio was born and educated himself to become a fighter and his fight had a goal: freedom and equality," the Current Portuguese President Rebelo de Sousa said in a televised statement.

De Sousa didn't mention Sampaio's cause of death, but, the former president suffered from poor health for several years, and he stayed at a hospital in Lisbon two weeks before declaring his death.

The late served as Portugal's President for two terms between 1996, and 2006.

Previously, he was the mayor of Lisbon, Portugal's capital.

Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa described Sampaio as a real defender of democracy.

Moreover, the country declared three days of mourning over the death of the political figure and lowering all flags to half starting from tomorrow, Saturday.

The details of the funeral will be provided later.
