Mohamed Al Nady, the head of the scientific committee for competing against Coronavirus said that Egypt is totally free of the newly emerged COVID-19 variant 'Mu,' media agencies reported on Friday.

Al Nady explained during his phone interview with TV anchor Shafky Al Moneiry that there are several variants of Coronavirus. He added that the first variant, Alpha, is the strongest until now because it caused this pandemic.

On the other hand, there are other minor variants that infect limited persons and they could not be named pandemic.

The expert continued that people should wait for more detailed reports about the new variant, Mu, regarding its resistance to vaccines, asserting that Mu's resistance against vaccines approval means back to square one.

He also called for the importance of setting strict observation in all ports to control the emergence of COVID-19 mutations.

‘Mu’ was identified for the first time in Colombia in January 2021, and it was detected in 39 countries until now. In addition, WHO named the new strain as a “variant of interest, according to AFP.

This variant is still under study, so its ability to resist the protection given to humans by the vaccine is not confirmed yet.
